003-07

You can stack the stones yourself
You can stay awake all night
You can carry what was never
meant for your shoulders alone

In vain
In vain
All your striving
In vain

The wall you build without foundation
falls before the morning comes
The city that you guard with worry
was never yours to keep

In vain
In vain
All your watching
In vain

There is a weight that isn't yours
There is a watch you were not called to keep
There is a house that stands
when you have finally stopped building

Drop the tools
Step back from the wall
Not everything that's heavy
belongs on your back

In vain
In vain

Unless the ground is given
Unless the watch is kept by another
Unless the house is built by more than hands —

Wasted breath
Empty walls
In vain
