God is not religion to me
Not a habit, not a name
He stayed with me through many years
Through loss and change and shame
He did not always calm the storm
He did not always make things light
But he kept teaching me the truth
And stayed with me at night

Not perfect
Not holy in my own eyes
But changed

God is real to me
Because he changed my heart
He made me more honest
More quiet
More true

God is real to me
Because he did not leave
He taught me how to love
Without losing myself

Sometimes he spoke in simple words
Sometimes in silence, sometimes deep
Through songs and thoughts and little things
Through things my heart could keep

He did not make me something great
He made me something more like me
Less afraid
Less driven
Less split inside
More free

Still learning
Still weak in many ways
But held

God is real to me
Because he changed my heart
He made me more honest
More quiet
More true

God is real to me
Because he did not leave
He taught me how to love
Without losing myself

Not power
Not show
Not magic
Not pride
Just mercy
That stayed
And worked
Inside

God is real to me
Because he changed my heart
He made me more honest
More quiet
More true

God is real to me
Because he did not leave
He taught me how to love
Without losing myself

That is why
He is real
To me
