It is a warm evening
The kind where you do not want to go inside
I have been thinking about foundations
Not the kind engineers discuss
The other kind
The kind that is already there
Before you start building
Or is not there
And you only find out later
I have been reading an old shepherd
From a small place called Tekoa
He was not educated
He was not invited
He just showed up
And said what he saw
And what he saw
Was a city
Doing everything right
On a foundation
That had quietly
Stopped holding
And I have been reading another man
Who told a story about two houses
Same storm
Same rain
Different ground
Neither story
Ends where you think it ends
What you are about to hear
Is not a sermon
It is not a warning
It is not a checklist
It is three questions
That came out of those two old texts
On a warm evening
When I did not want to go inside
You do not have to answer them
You just have to hear them
What is actually under there
Is anyone home
And — how much time do we have
Let us begin
