Build your house upon the rock
And the rains came down
And the floods came up
And the house on the rock stood firm
We sang that
Many times
And then went home
Checked the box
Built the house
Or thought we did
Amos walked into a city
That was doing everything right
The festivals were full
The offerings were generous
The songs were loud
And he said
I hate your festivals
Your offerings smell wrong to me
Turn off the music
Not because they had stopped building
But because something had rotted
Under the foundation
Without anyone noticing
What if it looks like concrete?
Like certainty?
Like years of faithful attendance
And correct theology
And songs sung on key?
What if the slot beneath the house
Is empty
And the house is still standing
Only because the storm
Hasn't arrived yet?
Seek good and not evil
That you may live
Let justice roll on like a river
Righteousness like a never-failing stream
Build your house upon the rock
And the rains came down
And the floods came up
And the house on the rock stood firm
Amos didn't tell them what to build
He told them what was missing
That's the harder word
That's the word that stays
Which ground are you actually standing on?
Build your house upon the rock
And the rains came down
And the floods came up
And the house on the rock stood firm
Seek good and not evil
That you may live
Let justice roll on like a river
Righteousness like a never-failing stream
Build your house upon the rock
And the rains came down
And the floods came up
And the house on the rock stood firm
