Where would you expect wisdom?
A cave
A mountaintop
A locked library
A whispered password
Wrong on every count

I stand where the roads cross
I stand at the city gates
I stand on the heights
Above the highway
Where the traffic is
Where the noise is
Where you already are

She calls in public
She was never hiding
Not a secret to unlock
A voice to stop ignoring
She calls in public
The question was never where
The question is
Will you slow down?

To all of you, I call
Not to the brilliant few
To the simple. To the loud
To the ones who took
The wrong exit years ago
My words are right
None of them crooked
None of them coiled

Take instruction over silver
Knowledge over the finest gold
Not because gold is evil
Because gold cannot tell you
What to do with gold

Nothing you desire
Compares with her
And she stands
At your bus stop

She calls in public
She was never hiding
Not a secret to unlock
A voice to stop ignoring
She calls in public
The question was never where
The question is
Will you slow down?

The call is old
The corner is yours
The voice is still
Raised
