Every job needs a crew
And every bad crew
Has the same problem
Somebody thinks
The job is about him
So before we recruit
One rule
Don't think of yourself
More highly than you are
Not less, either
Think straight
Think sober
Measure, not fire
Because the man who cases the room
Believing he's the star
Gets three people caught
And one of them
Is you
Different jobs, same night
Same door
No comparison
Comparison is how crews
Fall apart
Before the alarm
Goes off
So: who's in
The one who says the true thing
When the true thing costs something
Take her
The one who does the work
Nobody photographs
Take him
The one who can explain the plan
So the youngest gets it
Take her
The one who steadies your nerve
At the last door
Take him
The one who gives
And here's the note in the margin
Give it plainly
No strings
No ledger
No small print in the smile
The one who leads
Lead with care
Not with volume
And the one who shows mercy
Do it with a bright face
Mercy delivered grimly
Arrives as a bill
Nobody here got their skill
By deserving it
Every gift on this list
Came in the mail
That's why nobody's
Above the rest
We're all
Receiving
Different jobs, same night
Same door
No comparison
Comparison is how crews
Fall apart
Before the alarm
Goes off
A hand that wants to be an eye
Is useless
As both
An eye that despises the hand
Starves
You are not the plan
You are a part
And a part is not
A small thing
A part is
The only thing
That ever gets anything
Done
One body
Many members
Look around this table
That's your crew
That's the body
No missing superstar
Is coming to replace it
Good
Take your places
