There's a line in the middle of the list
That has no technique in it
No method
No steps
Nothing to practice
Except being there
Not: fix those who weep
Not: explain to those who weep
Not: find the good in it
For those who weep
Weep
Same room
Same table
Same wet face
Sit down
Don't reach for the answer
The answer is not what they came for
They may not need an answer
They need not to be alone in it
And that you can offer
Without pretending
To know why
And the other half is harder
Than anyone admits
Rejoice with those who rejoice
When it's their news
When it's their door that opened
And yours that stayed shut
To be happy without a rider
Without the small cold voice
Doing arithmetic
In the back
That takes more renewal
Than the weeping does
Sit down
Don't reach for the answer
The answer is not what they came for
They may not need an answer
They need not to be alone in it
And that you can offer
Without pretending
To know why
Three men once sat with a broken friend
For seven days
And said nothing
Seven days on the ground
No answers
No theories
Seven days beside him
And those seven days
Were the best work
They ever did
Then they began to explain
And much of what followed
Became a warning
And there was a grave
Where the one who would call him out
Stood in the crowd
And cried
He knew what he was about to do
Soon the stone
Was moving
He wept anyway
Not because he didn't know the ending
Because knowing the ending
Is not the same
As being there
So sit down
Don't reach for the answer
Bring your face
Not your explanation
Weep with the weeping
Share the gladness
Stay in the room
Where usefulness
Has run out
That's the room
Where it counts
There's no chorus after this one
No lesson at the end
Just: I'm here
I'll sit
