Worth Running

ÆPISTOLI Worth Running follows a race that is neither self-improvement nor a victory parade. Across fifteen tracks, pressure, discipline, truth, love, contentment and surrender become forms of endurance—not proving oneself, but continuing because Christ has already taken hold. The album begins with Paul walking toward Jerusalem without knowing what awaits and ends with a Metal Mantra in which striving gives way to trust: You take over.

Durchhalten ohne Selbstbeweis.

009-01No PicnicDokumentationPaul walks toward Jerusalem, knowing the road will hurt, without making safety the measure of faithfulness. The race begins without certainty about the outcome, but with clarity about the task.+

Quelle: 009-01 · No Picnic.md

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me
My only aim is to finish the race
And complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me
The task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace

But there is another urgency before me now
I feel compelled to go to Jerusalem
I’m completely in the dark about what will happen
When I get there
I do know that it won’t be any picnic

I do know that it won’t be any picnic
My only aim is to finish the race
The job the Master Jesus gave me

For the Holy Spirit has let me know
Repeatedly and clearly
That there are hard times
And imprisonment ahead
But that matters little

I do know that it won’t be any picnic
My only aim is to finish the race
The job the Master Jesus gave me

What matters most to me is to finish what God started
The job the Master Jesus gave me
Of letting everyone I meet know all about this
Incredibly
Extravagant
Generosity
Of God

I do know that it won’t be any picnic
My only aim is to finish the race
The job the Master Jesus gave me

And so this is good-bye
You’re not going to see me again
Nor I you
You whom I have gone among for so long proclaiming the news
Of God’s inaugurated kingdom

I do know that it won’t be any picnic
My only aim is to finish the race
The job the Master Jesus gave me

I’ve done my best for you
Given you my all
Held back nothing of God’s will for you

I do know that it won’t be any picnic
My only aim is to finish the race
The job the Master Jesus gave me

Then Paul went down on his knees
All of them kneeling with him
And prayed

And then a river of tears
Much clinging to Paul, not wanting to let him go
They knew they would never see him again
He had told them quite plainly
The pain cut deep

Then, bravely, they walked him—down to the ship
009-02Faith Under PressureDokumentationPressure is not praised for hurting; it is allowed to reveal what faith is made of. The danger is not the test itself, but escaping before endurance can finish its work.+

When everything comes at you from all sides
That’s not punishment
That’s pressure
And pressure reveals

Consider it a gift
When tests arrive

Not because pain is good
Because what it exposes
Is real

Under pressure
Your faith shows its true colors
No hiding
No performance
Just what’s actually there

Don’t get out prematurely
Let it do its work

Pressure is not the enemy
Premature escape is

If you don’t know what you’re doing
Ask

Not timidly
Not with one foot out the door

Ask boldly
Ask as if you expect an answer
Because you will get one

Don’t get out prematurely
Let it do its work

Pressure is not the enemy
Premature escape is

But don’t blame God
For the pressure that breaks you

God puts evil in no one’s way
What rises up
Comes from inside

Name it for what it is
Don’t dress it up

The temptation to give in
Comes from us
Only us

That’s not condemnation
That’s clarity

If I know where it starts
I know where to stand

Don’t get out prematurely
Let it do its work

Pressure is not the enemy
Premature escape is

Let it do its work
So you become mature
Not deficient
In any way
009-03Build on RockDokumentationTwo houses hear the same words and meet the same storm. What separates them is not religious vocabulary, but whether the words have become ground.+

Quelle: 009-03 · Build on Rock.md

These words I speak to you
Don’t just listen to them
Put them into practice

If you work these words into your life
You are like a smart carpenter
Who built his house on solid rock

Rain poured down
The river flooded
A tornado hit

But nothing moved that house
It was fixed to the rock

What are you building on?
What holds when the storm hits?
Not the words you say
The ground you stand on

But if you just use my words in Bible studies
And don’t work them into your life
You are like a stupid carpenter
Who built his house on the sandy beach

When a storm rolled in
And the waves came up
It collapsed like a house of cards

What are you building on?
What holds when the storm hits?
Not the words you say
The ground you stand on

The same storm
The same words
Two houses

One stands
One doesn’t

The difference is not belief
The difference is ground

You can call it rock
But if it’s yourself
It’s sand

You can call it sand
But if it holds
It’s rock

What are you building on?
What holds when the storm hits?
Not the words you say
The ground you stand on

These words I speak to you
Don’t just listen to them
Put them into practice

And you will know the difference
When the storm comes

Not before
009-04DisciplineDokumentationCorrection feels contrary in the moment, yet it can be the shape of being treated as a beloved child. May a responsible God train rather than merely soothe?+

Quelle: 009-04 · Discipline.md

At the time, discipline isn’t much fun
It always feels like it’s going against the grain
Later, of course, it pays off big-time
For it’s the well-trained who find themselves
Mature in their relationship with God

Would you prefer a responsible or an irresponsible God?
So we embrace God’s training
So we can truly live!

So we can truly live!
So we can truly live!
So we can truly live!

We embrace God’s training!
So we can truly live!
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
He also corrects

My dear child, don’t shrug off God’s discipline
But don’t be crushed by it either
It’s the child He loves that He disciplines
The child He embraces, He also corrects

We embrace God’s training!
So we can truly live!
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
He also corrects

God is educating you
That’s why you must never drop out
He’s treating you as dear children

We embrace God’s training!
So we can truly live!
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
He also corrects

In this all-out match against sin
Others have suffered far worse than you
To say nothing of what Jesus went through
All that bloodshed!

So don’t feel sorry for yourselves

We embrace God’s training!
So we can truly live!
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
He also corrects

God regards you as His children
God regards you as His children
The child He embraces, He also corrects
God regards you as His children
God regards you as His children
The child He embraces, He also corrects

We embrace God’s training!
So we can truly live!
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
The child He embraces
He also corrects

So don’t feel sorry for yourselves
God regards you as His children
The child He embraces, He also corrects
He’s treating you as dear children

It always feels like it’s going against the grain
But the child He embraces
He also corrects
009-05Lost CapacityDokumentationTruth can be lost gradually: not through one spectacular lie, but through repeated distortion until discernment goes numb. The answer is steady practice: guarding character, teaching, gratitude and the entrusted gift.+

The Spirit makes it clear that as time goes on, some are going to give up on the faith and chase after demonic illusions put forth by professional liars
These liars have lied so well and for so long that they’ve lost their capacity for truth

They will tell you not to get married
They’ll tell you not to eat this or that food
Perfectly good food God created to be eaten heartily and with thanksgiving by believers who know better!
Everything God created is good
And to be received with thanks
Nothing is to be sneered at and thrown out
God’s Word and our prayers make every item in creation holy

Don’t be diverted
Just keep at it
Both you and those who hear
You will experience salvation

You’ve been raised on the Message of the faith and have followed sound teaching
Now pass on this counsel to the followers of Jesus there
And you’ll be a good servant of Jesus
Stay clear of silly stories that get dressed up as religion
Exercise daily in God
No spiritual flabbiness, please!
Workouts in the gymnasium are useful
But a disciplined life in God is far more so
Making you fit both today and forever
You can count on this
Take it to heart
This is why we’ve thrown ourselves into this venture so totally
We’re banking on the living God
Savior of all men and women
Especially believers

Don’t be diverted
Just keep at it
Both you and those who hear
You will experience salvation

Get the word out
Teach all these things
And don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young
Teach believers with your life
By word
By demeanor
By love
By faith
By integrity
Stay at your post reading Scripture
Giving counsel
Teaching
And that special gift of ministry you were given when the leaders of the church laid hands on you and prayed
Keep that dusted off and in use

Don’t be diverted
Just keep at it
Both you and those who hear
You will experience salvation

Cultivate these things
Immerse yourself in them
The people will all see you mature right before their eyes!
Keep a firm grasp on both
Your character
And your teaching

Don’t be diverted
Just keep at it
Both you and those who hear
You will experience salvation
009-06ReminderDokumentationThe command is not new: live in love without abandoning truth. Against smooth novelty and disembodied talk, the letter longs for a face-to-face meeting.+

Permit me a reminder, friends, and this is not a new commandment
But simply a repetition of our original and basic charter: that we love each other

Love means following His commandments
And His unifying commandment is that you conduct your lives in love
This is the first thing you heard
And nothing has changed

I have a lot more things to tell you, but I’d rather not use paper and ink
I hope to be there soon in person and have a heart-to-heart talk
That will be far more satisfying to both you and me

Everyone who knows the Truth that has taken up permanent residence in us loves you

Permit me a reminder
And this is not a new commandment
It is simply a repetition of our original and basic charter

Anyone who gets so progressive in his thinking that he walks out on the teaching of Christ, walks out on God
But whoever stays with the teaching, stays faithful to both the Father and the Son

Permit me a reminder
And this is not a new commandment
It is simply a repetition of our original and basic charter

Don’t walk out on God
There are a lot of smooth-talking con artists loose in the world
Give them their true title: Deceiver!

And be very careful around them so you don’t lose out on what we’ve worked so diligently in together

Permit me a reminder
And this is not a new commandment
It is simply a repetition of our original and basic charter

Love means following His commandments
And His unifying commandment is that you conduct your lives in love
This is the first thing you heard
And nothing has changed

009-08Learn to Think Like HimDokumentationSuffering breaks the old demand to get one's own way. To think like Christ is practical: stay awake, love urgently, open the table and pass on what you were given.+

Since Jesus went through everything you’re going through and more
Learn to think like Him
Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way
Then you’ll be able to live out your days
Free to pursue what God wants
Instead of being tyrannized
By what you want

Learn to Think Like Him

You’ve already put in your time in that God-ignorant way of life
Partying night after night
A drunken and profligate life
Now it’s time to be done with it for good

Learn to Think Like Him

Of course, your old friends don’t understand why you don’t join in with the old gang anymore
But you don’t have to give an account to them
They’re the ones who will be called on the carpet
And before God Himself

Learn to Think Like Him

Listen to the Message
It was preached to those believers who are now dead
And yet even though they died
Just as all people must
They will still get in on the life that God has given in Jesus

Learn to Think Like Him

Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up
So take nothing for granted
Stay wide-awake in prayer
Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it
Love makes up for practically anything

Learn to Think Like Him

Be quick to give a meal to the hungry
A bed to the homeless—cheerfully
Be generous with the different things God gave you
Passing them around so all get in on it
If words, let it be God’s words
If help, let it be God’s hearty help

That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus
And He’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time
Oh, yes!

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life

My dear, dear friends!
I love you so much
I do want the very best for you
You make me feel such joy, fill me with such pride
Don’t waver
Stay on track, steady in God

I urge you to iron out your differences and make up
God doesn’t want His children holding grudges
Do your best with them
These people worked for the Message hand in hand with Clement and me, and with the other veterans
Worked as hard as any of us
Remember, their names are also in the Book of Life

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life

Celebrate God all day, every day
I mean, revel in Him!
Make it as clear as you can to all you meet that you’re on their side, working with them and not against them
Help them see that the Master is about to arrive
He could show up any minute!

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life

Don’t fret or worry
Instead of worrying, pray
Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers
Letting God know your concerns

Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness
Everything coming together for good
Will come and settle you down

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life

Summing it all up, friends
I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on
Things true
Things noble
Things reputable
Things authentic
Things compelling
Things gracious
The best, not the worst
The beautiful
Not the ugly
Things to praise
Not things to curse

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life

Put into practice what you learned from me
What you heard and saw and realized

Do that
And God
Who makes everything work together
Will work you into His most excellent harmonies

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life
009-10Learned by NowDokumentationContentment is not having solved life. It is discovering a ground that holds in lack and abundance, strengthened by a relationship no circumstance can calculate.+

I’ve been low
I’ve been full
I’ve had little
I’ve had much

And somewhere between the two
I found a way through

Not because the circumstances changed
Because something in me did

I can make it through anything
In the One who makes me who I am

Not louder
Not stronger
Just held

I’ve learned to be content
Wherever I am

Not by pretending
Not by ignoring

By discovering
That enough
Is not a number

It’s a ground

I can make it through anything
In the One who makes me who I am

Not louder
Not stronger
Just held

You came alongside me
When things were hard

Not once
More than once

That matters
That stays

And God
Who receives what you give
Gives back
In ways
You can’t calculate

Not a transaction
A friendship

I can make it through anything
In the One who makes me who I am

Not louder
Not stronger
Just held

Receive the grace
Of the Master, Jesus
Deep

„You take over“ ist deshalb keine Flucht vor Verantwortung, sondern die Absage an Selbstrechtfertigung.

You take over
This is the race I am running now
This is the race I am running now

I run as long as I have breath
I believe—as far as I see

This is the race I am running now
This is the race I am running now

You take over
My life is not an altar
It is simply given

I run because I must
Not because I am certain
Not because I deserve applause

If there is a finish
It is not mine to declare

You take over
If I am wrong
Correct me
If I am driven
Slow me

You take over
This is the race I am running now
I run as long as I have breath
I believe—as far as I see

If there is justice

009-12PatienceDokumentationTrouble is not glorified, but it can forge patience into tested character and alert hope. Grace begins before readiness and turns endurance into praise, not grim survival.+

Quelle: 009-12 · Patience.md

By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us
Set us right with Him, make us fit for Him
We have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus
And that’s not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that He has already thrown open His door to us
We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand
Out in the wide open spaces of God’s grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise

There’s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we’re hemmed in with troubles
Because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us
And how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue
Keeping us alert for whatever God will do next
In alert expectancy such as this, we’re never left feeling shortchanged
Quite the contrary
We can’t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!

Christ arrives right on time to make this happen
He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready
He presented Himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready
And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway
We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice
But God put His love on the line for us by offering His Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to Him

Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice
There is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way
If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of His Son
Now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of His resurrection life!

Now that we have actually received this amazing friendship with God, we are no longer content to simply say it in plodding prose

We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah!

He could have turned back
Every time He could have turned back

He didn’t

Not for the crowd
Not for the proof
Not because it was easy

Because the finish was real

When you find yourselves flagging in your faith
Go over that story again
Item by item

That long litany of hostility
He ploughed through

That will shoot adrenaline
Into your souls

We are not alone
We have never been alone

A cloud of witnesses
Surrounding us
Cheering us on

Run
Run
Run

All these pioneers
All these veterans

They ran

Now it’s your turn
009-15Race Worth RunningDokumentationOne sentence remains after every argument is exhausted. Repeated as a Metal Mantra, it releases the need to explain the race and hands its direction back: You take over.+
